In the lead-up to the Champions League final against Inter Milan, Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola shared his thoughts on the success of his career and highlighted the importance of having great players, including Lionel Messi in the past and Erling Haaland currently.
Guardiola emphasized that having quality players has been crucial in his trajectory: "The key to my success is having great players. Having Messi in the past and Haaland now. That's my success. I'm not joking. Every successful coach has had great players. A coach has never scored a goal," he expressed during a press conference.
The Catalan strategist will be leading his fourth Champions League final this Saturday, the second with Manchester City following their defeat to Chelsea in 2021. Guardiola acknowledged that he cannot draw lessons learned from that final as this is a different match, two years later, with different players.
With these words, Guardiola reinforces the importance of having top-level players on his path to success, highlighting the influence that both Messi and Haaland have had on his coaching career. Now, Guardiola is focused on the Champions League final and hopes that his tactical plan and the performance of his players will lead them to conquer the coveted European title.
Lastly, Guardiola expressed confidence in Erling Haaland, who has scored a goal in his last seven matches and did not hesitate to back him up: "I have no doubts, he will help us win the Champions League," he concluded.
