The French side were after a star striker, but Los Blaugranas signed him.

In the last decade Paris Saint-Germain became one of the most powerful clubs in Europe. Since Qatari investors bought the French side, they started to spend a lot of money on top players and coaches. This allowed them to dominate Ligue 1, but they have not yet been able to do the same in the Champions League. In fact, they only reached one final, against Bayern Munich in 2020.

Two years ago, Nasser Al-Khelaifi surprised fans around the world by signing Lionel Messi. The Argentine star was unable to renew his contract with Barcelona and decided to go to Paris, where he was reunited with his friend Neymar Jr. The two of them, along with Kylian Mbappé, formed a top-level attacking trio, although on the pitch things never worked out.

However, details of PSG's plan at the time have now emerged. The intention was to add yet another star, Robert Lewandowski. The Polish striker was shining at Bayern Munich and had decided to change clubs in the summer of 2022. The French side were interested in signing him, but Barcelona thwarted those plans and convinced the striker to go to Catalunya.

Al-Khelaifi wanted him

The PSG owner, in an interview with Polish media Meczyki.com, was asked about this and replied: "I have a policy of not talking about players who are not at PSG and transfers that will happen or were supposed to happen. But it's no secret that Robert is an incredible striker. Every club in the world looked at him and at some point thought about signing him. But Robert is at Barcelona today and I respect him. There weren't many snipers like that scoring goals in almost every game. Goal-scoring machine. And a great guy. We met and I can only speak very highly of him".
