Manchester City beat Fulham 2-1 at the end of the first half, in a match that has been interesting and has had several dangerous situations for both teams. The Citizens got the opener and things seemed to be heading for an easy victory, but surprisingly The Cottagers scored the equaliser just a few moments later. However, Aké appeared in the final minutes to make it 2-1.
Juanma Lillo, Guardiola's main assistant and the team's coach while Pep is recovering from back surgery in Spain, surprised everyone by including Jeremy Doku in the starting lineup, leaving Bernardo Silva on the bench. In addition, the latest signing, Matheus Nunes, is on the bench for the first time, wearing the number 27.
The start of the match was favorable for Fulham, who took advantage of a couple of mistakes by Manuel Akanji to generate attacks. In the most dangerous of them, Bobby Reid sent a cross to Raúl Jiménez, who was about to shoot when Akanji managed to intercept the ball, making amends for his mistake.
After 31 minutes came the opener, when Mateo Kovacic gave a great pass to Erling Haaland. The Norwegian striker, inside the box, was not selfish and instead of finishing sent a drilled cross to Julian Alvarez, who only had to push the ball and netted his second goal in 4 games in Premier League 2023/24. However, the joy was short-lived for the Citizens, as just two minutes later Pereira swung a corner into the box, Jiménez shot and Ederson saved the ball, but Tim Ream grabbed the rebound and scored the equaliser.
With stoppage time played, Foden sent in a corner from the left that found Nathan Aké alone inside the box. The Dutch defender scored the second with a great header, but the Fulham players claimed a passive offside by Akanji, who obstructed the vision of goalkeeper Leno. After a VAR review, referee Michael Oliver validated the goal, which provoked the ire of the visiting players.
