Inter Miami became the most important team in the United States in just a few weeks. The arrival of Lionel Messi changed everything for the Herons, who went from being the worst team in Major League Soccer to being champions of the Leagues Cup and finalists of the US Open Cup. The Argentine star is largely responsible for this transformation, but he did not do it alone.
Other stars were also instrumental. Coach Gerardo Martino arrived almost at the same time as Leo and in just a few weeks he managed to improve the team, giving them an attacking and eye-catching style, and organizing them defensively. And other former Barcelona players also contributed their talents: Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.
The latter, one of the players with whom Messi understands himself best on the field, is in the news this week for something that has nothing to do with Inter Miami. Alba decided to retire from the Spanish National Team and will not be in the list of called-up players of coach Luis De La Fuente for the international break in September, when they will face Georgia and Cyprus in the qualifiers for the Euro 2024.
According to Sport newspaper, the decision has 100% sporting reasons. The left-back considers that his time in the national team is over and it is time to make room for young players. For this reason, the coach will now have to choose who will replace him. Alex Balde, from Barcelona, seems to have a guaranteed place, while Fran García from Real Madrid, José Gayá from Valencia and Alfonso Pedraza from Villarreal could join him.
Jordi Alba made his debut in the Spanish National Team in 2011 and since then he has been an important player. He played 93 games and won 2 titles: the Euro 2012 and the Nations League 2022/23. In addition, he played 3 World Cups (Brazil 2014, Russia 2018 and Qatar 2022) and the London 2012 Olympic Games.
