During the November international break, the Spanish national team faced Cyprus and Georgia in group A of the Euro 2024 qualifiers. In the last of those matches, Gavi had to be replaced during the first half due to severe pain in his right knee. He jumped to contest the ball and, when he fell, he did so with the full weight of his body on his knee, which was left in an unnatural position.
The player's gestures of pain worried everyone, so a few hours later he underwent medical tests that gave the worst results: he suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligaments of his right knee, as well as a meniscus injury. This means that he will not be able to play for a long time, probably between six and eight months.
After a week, this Tuesday Barcelona announced news about Gavi's situation. Through a message on social media, they reported: "First team player Gavi had a successful operation on his torn right knee anterior cruciate ligament plus a meniscus suture today. Supervised by the Club's Medical Services, Doctor Joan Carles Monllau performed the intervention at Hospital de Barcelona."
The surgery is the first step for the young player and now will come a long period of recovery, until he can play again with the team. It is a fact that he will miss the rest of the 2023/24 season, as well as Euro 2024 with the Spanish National Team and, probably, also the Olympic Games in Paris.
Gavi's injury allows Barcelona to add a player regardless of financial fair play, as La Liga rules establish an exception for these cases. The Catalan side will be able to use the money equivalent to 80% of Gavi's salary to sign a new player. Everything indicates that the chosen one will be Vitor Roque, Brazilian striker of Athletico Paranaense.
