This Tuesday Manchester United will have their last chance in the Champions League. Things have not gone well for them this season in Europe, as they are last in Group A with 4 points. So far they lost 3 of the 5 matches they played, barely won one (against Copenhagen at Old Trafford) and drew another (against Galatasaray in Istanbul).
That is why they arrive at the last group match in a critical situation. Although they have a chance of advancing to the round of 16 of the tournament, they will need a miracle. The only combination of results that will allow them to celebrate is to get a win against Bayern Munich and hope that Copenhagen and Galatasaray draw in Denmark. Anything else that happens will leave the Red Devils out of the Champions League.
It will not be an easy mission for them. First of all, because their own performances have not been satisfactory lately. That's why coach Erik Ten Hag and the players have been harshly criticized by the press and the fans. And also because they have an obligation to beat the group leaders, who so far have not lost a game in the tournament.
But that is not all. The German side also have an impressive positive streak in the Champions League: they have not lost a group stage game for more than 6 years. The last time was in September 2017, when Paris Saint-Germain beat them 3-0 in France. Since then they have played 39 games and no one could manage it.
At the pre-match press conference, Bayern Munich coach Thomas Tuchel assured: “We can show a reaction on one of the biggest stages in global football. When you wear the Bayern Munich jersey, you behave like champions, there's no other way. We have high expectations, even if we are always under pressure. United will give everything to get through. But we expect a top performance from us”.
