The world champions won 1-0 in Rio de Janeiro, but nobody saw this coming.

This Tuesday the Argentine National Team got an important 1-0 victory against Brazil at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro, thanks to Nicolas Otamendi's goal 18 minutes into the second half. It was a historic achievement, as their rivals had never lost a qualifying match at home in almost 70 years.

The victory also allowed them to remain the sole leaders of the standings with 15 points. And they gained a 10-point lead over Paraguay, who are in seventh place and are currently the last to enter the 2026 World Cup qualification zone. This means that Argentina are close to securing their place in soccer's most important tournament.

However, in the midst of the celebrations for this important victory, something unexpected happened. At the post-match press conference, Argentine coach Lionel Scaloni answered questions from journalists and, before leaving, decided to give a message that worried everyone, including Lionel Messi and his squad mates.

"Now it's time to stop the ball. These players have given me a lot. And I need to think a lot about what I'm going to do. It's not a goodbye or anything else but I need to think because the bar is very high and it's complicated to continue, it's complicated to keep winning and these guys make it difficult", began the manager, to the surprise of those who were there and the thousands of spectators watching him on TV.

What does this mean?

Then Scaloni added: "Now I am going to think and then I will tell the president (of the Argentine Football Association, Claudio Tapia) and I will tell the players later because this National Team need a coach who has all the possible energy and who is well". When asked by a journalist if he was announcing his resignation, he clarified: "I am not saying that. I am commenting on what is happening".
